On the road

Just a quick update on our progress. It is now day five of your little journey. On the first day we set out from London and drove down to the coast. We visited Canterbury for an evening (the cathedral above is from there), spent a night on a campsite near the sea and then walked all along the white cliffs of Dover. I had driven past these cliffs quite a few times but never stopped.

On Friday afternoon we took the ferry from Dover to Calais and then drove down the channel coast until we found a suitably pretty spot. After a picnic on the beach, watching the sunset, we camped out wild in the little valley. It was beautiful and we slept perfectly well, apart from an odd incident at 4 am that involved somebody going past on a horse, coming back on foot and then being picked up by a car. The Mister keeps insisting I dreamt it but I’m actually quite convinced it happened.

On Saturday the Mister was incredibly sweet. He had forbidden me from reading the guidebook entry for Calais beforehand because he wanted to surprise me. The surprised turned out to be a lace and fashion museum which he patiently followed me through for the better part of two hours. I loved it. In the afternoon, we went back to the beach. Turns out trying to damn the tidal pools is just as much fun when you are 22 as it is when you are 7. We also took a long walk through the dunes and I really enjoyed it. My 8 year old self would be appalled.

On Sunday we left France for Belgium and travelled to Bruges and Gent. Both are absolutely beautiful. Especially Bruges looks like it was built in the 13th century and then forgotten by the world. Think brick buildings, cobblestone streets, shady canals and impressive towers competing for the sky. I loved it.

After a night on a camping ground in the Belgian countryside we spent the morning in Antwerp and are now about to set of for Amsterdam in the Netherlands. See you soon!
